You could read in the story:

“What is it saying?” Tups asked as though Rooph should have the answer.

Thus, Rooph is described as the smartest of the group

You could read in the story:

"Tups, Rowtch, I think this robot is trying to communicate with us".

"Perhaps if we open this, we can fix it. Maybe then it will talk properly?".

//: The Riddle: In how many distinguishable ways can the letters of the word ROBOT be arranged?

When you seek to compute the number of ways to arrange the letters of a given word, the following formula applies:

(Number of letters)! = (nb of letters) * (nb of letters-1)* (nb of letters-2)*...

For the word ROBOT the formula gives: 5! = 5*4*3*2*1 = 120

However, we are looking here for the number of distinguishable ways to arrange the letters of the given word ROBOT.
As you can see, there are two -Os in this word. Let's call them O1 and O2.
You can't count RO1BO2T and RO2BO1T as being 2 ways of arranging the letters, because they are not distinguishable.
This principle applying to all arrangements, you have to divide by 2 the number of total ways to arrange these letters.

Consequently, the correct answer is (5! / 2) = 60
